Braking for Bodies by Duffy Brown
I am creating this blog to review books from my favorite authors. Today's book is for "Braking for Bodies" by Duffy Brown. This book comes out April 5th of 2016.
"Braking for Bodies" gets a Giggle Award from me. I love when a writer can insert well written humor into an otherwise tense storyline. Duffy is a master of this style. This is book Two in her Cycle Path Mysteries set on Mackinac Island. Her wonderful lead is the struggling artist Evie Bloomfield. Poor Evie is someone I can relate to, she really struggles to help her friends and is seriously under appreciated. She is a talented artist and paints bicycles for a Bike Shop on the island. She paints wonderful themed bikes that appeal to everyone who comes to vacation. See Mackinac has no motored transport. It is a 6 mile Island in Lake Huron. There is no bridge to the island. There is ferry service from Spring to Fall. Then the Island is pretty much frozen in for the winter. And the mode of Transportation is Bicycle, Horse drawn taxis or Walking. And the main trade on the island are the fudge shops and lovely shops. The main place to stay is the Grand Hotel, the location that "Somewhere in Time" with Jane Seymore was shot.
So here is Evie waiting to pick up a package at the docks when she sees her friend Fiona also waiting on the ferry. Only Fiona is agitated, and carrying Garlic and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Evie is sure this can't be good. In the confusion of arriving guests (Fudgies as the locals call the tourists) Evie gets the wrong package and Fiona is met by her ex box from Los Angeles and his bimbo mistress, Peephole Perry and Zo. Perry makes some not so veiled threats at Fiona and she basically tells him to drop dead and throws Garlic at him.
Things rapidly go downhill from there with Evie finding Perry dead and Fiona seems to be the prime suspect. From there she is on a rollercoaster ride to no where fast and between death threats, being hounded by the very Dishy sheriff and trying to keep Fiona out of jail Evie is up to her eyeballs in the search for the killer.
I definitely had trouble putting this book down once I started. Duffy has once again wrapped me up in a whirlwind story and made me laugh so hard at times my dog went and hid.
Braking for Bodies available on April 5th. You will really be kept in the "whodoneit" ride right to the end.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you Rose, it's a great book and you can't find better than Duffy when you want a cozy mystery. I put her bookmarks at the local library along with dead body pens and they went like hotcakes.
ReplyDeleteThank you Duffy and Loveamystery! I really do love Duffy's books. She writes a wonderful story! I get lots of laughs thrown in with my mystery and that is just how I like it!
