Lorna Barrett's Booktown Mystery's, Book 8, "Book Clubbed"
Well, this book is a whirlwind of upsets, change and of course Murder. Since Angelica won the Presidency of the Chamber of Commerce, Ousting Bob Kelly after over 10 years, she has had to house the Chamber in her second floor storage room over The Cookery. Betsy Dittmeyer, the Chamber's receptionist is not at all happy with the change. But Bob, in a fit of childish jealousy over losing his status, won't renew the lease on the old building the Chamber had been housed in. Plus he is making it impossible for Angelica to find a new place to lease.
Tricia is eager to get to an auction for books for her store, Haven't Got A Clue, but is waiting for Angelica to deal with Betsy's latest tantrum and after Betsy goes to dump her trash in the dumpster and head back up to the office/storeroom. Tricia and Angelica are talking with Frannie and start hearing loud thumps and crashes from upstairs. They think it's Betsy taking her anger out on things up there. A few minutes later there is a huge crash that shakes the store and Angelica decides she has to see what mischief Betsy has done. Only when she and Tricia top the stairs she makes Tricia go in first where Tricia finds the storeroom in shambles and Betsy dead on the floor.
Things heat up from there with it being close to Valentine's Day and Mr Everett's birthday. Solving a murder, dealing with exes hounding her and wishing for a vacation from the snow and ice in New Hampshire all play a part in this story. Once again I find Lorna has crafted such a nice mystery that has me guessing right until the final moment. She wraps things up so creatively that I felt satisfied with the ending. And oh my, the recipes. She has a great recipe for Spanikopita listed. Now if she would do one for Lemon Chicken Soup. (hint, hint Lorna!)
